NEWMARKET JUBILEE
OPENING OF CELEBRATIONS THANKSGIVING SERVICE HELD The golden jubilee of the Borough of Newmarket is being celebrated this week, and Broadway is dedorated with streamers and pylons to mark the event. The opening function of the celebrations took the form of a thanksgiving service in the Municipal Hall yesterday afternoon. The Mayor, Mr. S. Donaldson, presided over a large attendance.
The fact that the borough had commenced its celebrations with a religious ceremony was commented on by the Rev. J. A. Thomson, of St. Luke's Presbyterian Church, Remuera, in an address at the service. He said that such action gave emphasis to.the things of eternal value in life, and to God's claims on the life of the community. The jubilee was a time for congratulation, and for appreciation of those who had seen ideals for the community and laboured toward their fulfilment. "We live in an age which calls for courageous thinking," added Mr. Thomson. "It is essential that we realise a sense of the things that are vital in a community's life." He instanced justice, brotherhood and religion as essentials in a community's progress. The Rev. P. Houghton, of St. Mark's, Ramuera, spoke of the need to look forward as well as back at a time of jubilee. The problems of to-day were different from those confronting the founders of Newmarket and in many respects they were greater. Life was becoming more. complex, and it was necessary to take a wider viewpoint of affairs. The moral and spiritual welfare of a borough was as important as its material well-being, and in the administration of a community it was essential to realise that governed and governors were all a part of the one complex body. To-day, in many parts of the world, there was too great a tendency to forget that. Major A. M. Perry and Captain F. Searle, of the Salvation Army, also took part in the service. The celebrations will be continued throughout the week.
