RELIEF WORK POLICY

POSITION AT MANUREWA NO SUSTENANCE RATES A decision by the Unemployment Board not to introduce sustenance rates for unemployed men at Manurewa was reported at the Manurewa Town Board last night. The clerk, Mr. H. Kay, reported that he had communicated with the Auckland office of the board regarding a number of men who were unfit for the heavy labour offering under No. 5 scheme. He had pointed out that all relief works had been approved with a definite allocation for relief wages. The officer in charge, Mr.. W. Slaughter, had stated he did not want sustenance rates in trod need, at Manurewa. If necessary job allocations would bo extended to permit of all men being employed. The chairman, Mr. \V. T. Cox, said it would be preferable to have the men concerned placed in a special gang on light work. He believed tho men would prefer that to sustenance. The board's consulting engineer, Mr. R. P. Worley, reported he had been advised by Mr. Slaughter that no sustenance would bo extended to Manurewa. Although tho men were unfit for work on approved schemes they would require to attend these jobs and do something. The Unemployment Board would not sanction light work, nor would it approve tho employment of the unfit men on maintenance work. Tho board decided to endeavour to employ tho men on tho approved schemes.
