AMERICA'S NEW DEAL
CONTROVERSIAL POINTS PRESIDENT ATTACKS CRITICS WASHINGTON. May 4 At a conference with the press this week President Roosevelt caustically criticised the anti-New Deal stand taken tip by the United States Chamber of Commerce. It is unusual for the President to use such an occasion to defend controversial policies, and his statements were sharp in the extreme. He flatly declared that the chamber was not truly representing American business, which, lie claimed, was supporting his recovery programme. . . v :\ To-day organised Labour, which had recently become critical of the Administration's labour policy, pledged its support to the President in an extension of the N.R.A. in its present form. A delegation called at White House and told the President that if the law was revised, as was contemplated 'by the Senate, the change would throw 60 to 75 per cent of workers out of the code structure.
