DEFEAT OF IMPROMPTU NO LUCK ON HOME COURSE Although the good pacer Impromptu has won 22 races, he has not succeeded in winning at Claudelands. where he is trained. Impromptu, who wa3 a good second choice for the Waikato Handicap on Saturday, made u fnst run crossing the top and into the straight but under pressure he tangled and this cost him third money He ran 4.27 into fourth place from his 4.24 mark, and if he had recorded his handicap time would have won, as Smooger clocked 4.32 1-5 from a 4.32 line It was at the Waikato May meeting last season that Impromptu, assisted by Lindbergh, established his grass •rack mile record of 2.4 1-5. He has won races at Epsom. Cambridge, Thames. New Plymouth, Hawera, Wnngonui, Wellington, Addington and Ashburton.

HAWERA TRAINER'S PLANS HORSES TO RACE AT EPSOM After his success with Smooger' in the Waikato Handicap on Saturday the Hawera trainer J. E Smith stated that he would remain at Hamilton for the Waikato Trotting Club's second meeting on June 1. after which he would bring his horses to Epsom for the Auckland winter fixture. Although Smooger has raced several times at Alexsndra Park, both as a trotter and a pacer, he has not succeeded in winning, although he has run some sound races and been placed at the pacing gait. Smith's other charge, Native Princess, a six-year-old full-siste' to Native Prince, did not do well after leaving Hawera and in "onseouence was not seen at her best on Saturday She is a trotter of more than average promise, and Bhould make good progress before her next Hamilton meeting
