CROWDS AND ACCIDENTS

Sir, —I should like to express my sentiments about the behaviour of the public of Auckland in regard to street accidents. The manner in which ■ a crowd of morbidly inquisitive people rush to the scene of an accident and cluster around the unfortunate victim, craning their necks and .shoving, is, to my mind, absolutely disgusting. Apart from the fact that they seriously hinder the valuable work of the ambulance men, the traffic is frequently blocked by these thoughtless creatures who can find nothing better to do than stand by looking at a sight from which many other persons would shrink. Surely it is high time that the police looked on this matter in a more serious light, and, might I suggest, made a penalty for such an offence. Fairplay.
