NOTES ON THE FORM

TWO-YEAR-OLD SCORES SECOND START. IN A RACE GREAT ADMIRAL'S EASY WIN BY ABAYDOS The two-year-old Ken Worthy, by Frank Worthy from a Peter Moko mare, won the Improvers' Handicap with a good finishing run. He went away 6lowly, but steadily, and with half the distance covered was in a handy position behind Cherrili, Derby ™ nie !„ Ureat, Chum and Kia Kaha. L/nerrili was the only one ahead of hinj at the distance, but ho finished better than the three-year-old to win by half a length, with Kia Kaha third. The winner won the two-year-old parade at the Auckland February meeting and was given a race on the second day at Cambridge Waere the holding track did not suit him. V\ ith the better footing Cherrili ran a good race. She began smartly and was not headed until the winner ran past her in the straight. Cherrili has once previously been placed, running second to Kewpie s Crest at Thames. Kia Kana, always well placed, ran one oi Jus few B obd races. He wae never further back than fifth, and crossing ti-e top put l . D i i B, ® o .°4 mn. to be handy at the turn. Although he beat the rest he had no chance with the first and Becond horses. Star Pronto ran a very solid race for fourth, while Our McKinney finished close up benmd him. Derby Fame and Great Chum were prominent to the turn, but faded out ii home. Bismuth, who was never really dangerous, was running on at the end. Good Rua on the Rails Going away smartly and getting a fine run on the rails along the back the favourite, Gieat Admiral, was quickly in third place in the Progressive Handicap. He followed the leader. Worthy Princess, until three furlongs from home, where he dashed to the front and the race was soon all over. Meadow King, who was not so fortunate in the running, was third with five furlongs to go and improved to finish second. Great Admiral is a very solid trotter, and has won throe races in four starts. He looks like reaching a high class. Meadow King also gave a further demonstration of the improvement effected by T. Roe. Once he got clear of the bunch he trotted very resolutely and although he could not make any imprission on the winner, beat the others very comfortably. This was his second defeat at the handß of Great Admiral. Captain Bolt, who made a couple of mis takes during the first mile, gave a useful display in the final stages to finish third, and when he develops more solidness should have a good chance of registering a win. Young Rodney and Audo Patch broke up at the 6tart. but were going in good style at the end and were almost in line behind the third horse, while Native Tree was the best of the remainder. Th«re was a creat finish in the Waikato Handicap, when the Hawera horse. Smooger, nicely handled by J. E. Smith, just shaded Jackie Thorpe, who was quickly iD the lead and tried to repeat his Cambridge Silver Jubilee success. Francis Lincoln. War Paint and Smooger were always handy to Jackie Thorpe, but leaving the straight the last time Willie Derby ran up fast on outside and was in behind Jackie Thorpe and Smooger along the buck, while Impromptu began to improve his position. Jackie Thorpfc was still clear at the home turn, but in side the distance Smooger challenged. Both finished gamely, but Smooger just outstayed Jackie Thorpe to score by half a head. Willie Derby was third. First Success for Year This was Smooger's first succesß since he won the Te Aroha Handicap last April, which followed upon his Hawera Cup victory. He did some of his earlier racing this season as a trotter, but has not won a race at that gait. Jackie Thorpe proved that he has made good improvement in stamina, and ran almost two seconds faster than when he won at Cambridge. He looked the winner half a furlong from home, and suffered a narrow defeat Willie Derby, who had not raced for some time, ran a fine race and will be improved as a result of the effort. Impromptu was going splendidly in the final stages and looked like being in the money until be mixed his gait. War Paint and Francis Lincoln had every chance, j but could not finish on. Homeward fell when the field entered the straight the first time. Patiently driven by C Moran, the very consistent Lady Amanda broke her long run of minor placinss by winning the Raglan Handicap from Red Frontier, who looked to have the race in safe keeping, but brok? a furlong from home. Lady Amanda was the early leader, and was always in a handy position behind Red Frontier, when the latter took charge along the back. Tryment also went fast crossing the top. but failed to finish on and was third Lady Amanda gained several minor places last season and again this season and this wns her first win for some considerable time She is trained at Kaipaki by her owner, W. V. Ganley Red Frontier did not go away as smartly as some of his rivals, but at the end of half a mile he ran up handy on the outside and, going fast along the bnck, was in front, to have a useful lead into the straight. When he was being hailed as the winner he broke and refused to settle down solidly, i but maintained second place to the post. Tryment, who was given every chance by careful handling, showed a fine burst of Bpeed along the back and into the straight, but did not sustain her run and was beaten into third place. Winaway, the favourite, ran a good race to be close up fourth. Star Pronto's Victory Taken steadily in the early stages and showing a fine burst of speed over the last three furlongs the unhoppled Star Pronto won the Waipa Handicap in a solid finish with Our McKinney. who fought on very gamely under pressure. The thiee-year old Parochial, 'he only one on the limit, led for a mile and a-quarter. and although at times he was mixing his gait, he battled on to get third money, with Kewpie'B Crest fourth . . Considering the good finishing run he made to get fourth in the Improvers Handicap the winner was at a false price. This was hie second success, both having gained since racing unhoppled. Our MoKinney, who won his first race at Cambridge last Monday, and was fifth in nis start earlier in the day, ran a very fine race and if be had made his run a little sooner would probably have reversed places with the winner Our McKinney is a sound young pacer who should reach a very useful standard. , . For a three-year-old who has not done much racing Parochial gave a promising display and when he becomes more sea soned should show winning form. Kewpie s Crest did well to finish fourth after being badly placed early. Charteris Bny and Jean Parrish were right in the Picture to the turn, but faded out. while Tinokaha broke badly early and was pulled up. The favourite. Ellectric Bell, mnde a bad beginning, but finished well in fifth place. Bingen Chief, a hot favourite for the Dominion Handicap, lost a good deal of ground at the start and did not settle down to , serious work until half the distance had , been covered, at which stage Homeward was giiiling along in front several lengths clenr Bingen Chief then commenced a great run and just (is he got his head ;n front ot Kewpie's Guy and Homeward at the finish Lady Coronado flashed up to beat him by a head in n thrilling finish. Heads Separate First Four If he had gone nway smoothly Bingen Chief would have won. but it was a splendid finishing run that gained Lady Coronado the victory. She was nicely handled by I. D. Lnwpon. who trains her. Kewpie s Guy ran one of her best races, and 50 yard* from the post held a good winning chance, but third was her portion in the very tight finish, in which heads only separated the ■ first four horses. Homeward early put a big break on the field, and had every chance, but stopped in the run home. _ Going more solidly than in his earlier start Red Frontier won the Eureka Handi can very convincingly He was third at th,» end of a round, but along the back went ur> fast to take charge crossing the top Although followed by Tryment. with Kewpie's King m,'iking a fast run. he wen l on to win very easily from Kewpie s King who finished solidly to cut Tryment out of second place. . Transworthy. a good favourite, .went very fast early to be up in front with Native Cole for six fiirlrmcs. but leaving the straight he broke up badly and dropped right back Lndy Amanda, penalised to 3fiyds. again ran a tine race to be r.loee up fourth.
