THE LEAGUE CODE

TWO EXCITING MATCHES CLOSE CALL FOR RICHMOND PONSONBY'S EASY VICTORY Some exciting play was witnessed at Carlaw Park on Saturday when the third series of matches in the senior championship of the Auckland Rugby League was decided. In the curtainraiser Richmond, last year's champion team, was hard pressed by Devonport to take the honours by a margin of a single point in a fast game which provided many thrills. The Devonport team received an ovation from the spectators as it left the field. The principal match, between Ponsonby and City, was disappointing, poor passing and handling spoiling much good play. In the second spell the Ponsonby rearguard combined well and ran all over the opposition in the concluding stages. Mount Albert caused surprise by dividing the points with Newton on the No. 2 ground, the game attracting considerable interest in the second half. Following were the results of Saturday's matches:— Ponsonby, 39; City, 13. Richmond, 10; Devonport, 9. Mount Albert, 22; Newton, 22.
