CONTESTS IN COUNTRY

KEREONE TEAM'S RECORDS CHAMPIONSHIP SUCCESSES llugby football competitions were continued in the various country centres of the Auckland Province on Saturday afternoon. The following results were forwarded by correspondents of the Herald: — Hamilton.—Two fast and interesting senior club matches were played at Rugby Park. The standard had improved considerably since the previous Saturday, and there were a number of spectacular movements. An early infringement gave Old Boys a chance with a free kick. Lissette was successful, the ball striking the inside of the upright and glancing between the posts. Shortly afterwards a good run by Heeps placed Frankton in a likely position. Old Boys failed to clear, and Everest scored. Snodgrass converted, his kick also striking the upright. Old Boys were next to score, a combined movement ending when a for- ' ward. Whittaker, crossed the line. Lissette failed to convert. A short kick found Old Boys' fullback out of position, and H. Hall scored for Frankton. The try was not converted. Heeps was responsible for the next spectacular movement. He dribbled the ball over half the length of the field and scored in the corner. He failed to convert. Shortly afterwards Old Boys launched a strong attack. Jones was tackled on the line, but was able to scoro before losing possession. Lissette converted, making the score 11-all. A penatrating movement by the Frankton backs 'broke down, but wss set going again by Denz. He carried the ball nearly to the line, allowing Griffiths to complete the movement by scoring. Wilson's kick failed. Frankton maintained the pressure, and Griffiths made a good run from half-way, cutting in and beating eevoral men before he was brought down. Gilmer picked up on the lino and scored. Snodgraßs converted. The game shortly afterwards with the score: Frankton. 19; Old Boys. 11. In the game between Marist and Technical Old Boys. Marist made a splendid recovery at the beginning of the second lialf. In the first spell Technical gained an advantage of 11 points, tries being scored by Porteous, Allen and Comer. Allen also converted a try. "Within 20 minutes of resuming play Marist had scored and converted four tries. "W. Cassidy secured the first of these and converted it himself. The other three were obtained in rapid succession by Dempsey, all being converted by Cassidy. For Northern Leebone, Spavan and Townsend scored, and Wetre converted twice and kicked one penalty goal, while Bryant also converted a try. For Hautapu R. Peake and J. Watt scored trieß. J. Meanie (2) and Dodd scored tries for United, Hewitt converting one and kicking a penalty goal. Wallace and G. Cooper scored for Leamington, N. Holmes converting both tries. Morrinsville.—The only senior game played here was between Old Boys and Kereone. As neither of these teams had been beaten this season, great interest centred on their coming together, and a number of supporters hoped that Kereone would be defeated, seeing it has held the Benior championship for many years. However, Kereone proved superior in both the forwards and backs. The Leeson brothers. J. and G., were the pick of the pack, and Russell and Bodmin were the outstanding players in the back line. Shortly after the Btart. the ball came out from a scrum at Old Boys' twenty-five, and Bodmin cut in to score in a handy position, W. Cameron converting. Bodmin kicked the ball through to Old Boys' line, and Clarkin followed up fast to pick up well and score. W. Cameron converted. From a forward tussle on the Old Boys' line, J. Leeson forced his way over to score in the corner. A minute later C. Cameron received the ball on the blind side from Russell, and ran over near the corner flag. Soon after the interval the ball came out from a scrum in Old Boys' twenty-five to Bodmin, who scored in the corner. From a scrum near Old Boys* line, Russell threw the ball out to Bell on the blind side, and he scored wide out. C. Cameron kicked the ball over Old Boys' line and followed up fast, to beat two opponents and touch down. W. Cameron converted. The game ended:— Kereone. 27; Old Boys, 0. Juniors: Old Boys, 6. Kereone, 6; Motumaoho, 3, Terriers. 0; United, 6, Tahuna, 3: Tainui, 22, Eastern, 3. Third grade: Old Boys, 23, Terriers, 0. Ta Aroha.—Morrinsville United v. Old Boys: Morrinsville quickly took up the aggressive, and a loose forward rush resulted in Tyler scoring. From a scramble near -the Old Boys' line Marshall crossed. In the second spell Old Boys soon invaded the visitors' ground, and from a combined back passing effort R. Jackson obtained the ball and scored. Old Boys again pressed and McQuarters crossed the line. Morrinsville worked the play back, and near the line Ray kicked the ball over to the goal posts, where Gordon secured and scored. Marshall converted, and the game ended: Morrinsville, 11; Old Boys, 6. Waihou, 27, City, 3. Juniors: Old Boys, 6; Elstow, 0: Waihou, 9; City, 5. Huntly.—Seniors: Huntly, 6, Gordonton, 0. Matamata.—Perfect football weather again favoured Matamata Rugby, and there was a good attendance at Bedford Park, where two fast and exciting senior games were staged. On No. 1 ground Patetere, with a player short until half-time, proved a gallant loser to Wardville, a much improved team. In the first half Patetere led by 7 points to 3, but in the second half Wardville easily held the upper hand and Patetere could score only from sudden oreaks. For Patetere D. Carlson (penalty goal) and Strong (field goal) scored in the first half, and D. Carlson and Thompson (tries) in the second half. Laverick got Wardville's early try and further tries were added by Ellis, Munro and Hughes. W. Carroll converting two. In the other senior game Hinuera, which in the knock-out fixture two weeks ago was beaten by Matamata, 20—0. staged a reversal of form and was somewhat unlucky not to have at least drawn. Matamata had the better of early play and Carlson scored following a clean break by Cole. He converted his try. Just before half-time Germann scored a try for Hinuera following a great run by Swap. In the second half Carlson again scored for Matamata after a good run. It was a splendid game, which kept the crowd on tenterhooks throughout. Te Awamutu.—The Waipa Rugby Union's championship matches in all three grades wero continued, five games being plnyed at Albert. Park headquarters and .two at Pironeia. In the seniors Rovers triumphed over Tokanui Maoris by 61. points to 0, putting on 35 points in the first half. At Pirongia Te Awamutu and Suburbs seniors drew, 3 points each, after a very keenand exciting contest. In the junior division Suburbs defeated To Awamutu by 6 points to 5, Old Boys defeated Te Mawhai by 9 points to 6, and Rovers defeated Tokanui by 12 points to 3. In the third grade Suburbs debated Old Boys by 10 points to 9, and High School defeated Te Awamutu by 9 points to 0. Dargaville.—The Northern Wairoa Rugby Union's senior matches resulted:—Northern Star, 5, Dargaville, 3; Kaihu Valley, 19, Southern. 0. Juniors: Dargaville. 6. Northern Star, 3: Tangowahine, 10, Kaihu Valley, 0. Tauranga.—The Tauranga Rugby Union's championships wero continued in glorious weather. The Jordan Cup senior game between Te Puna and Rangataua was keenly contested and was won by Te Puna by 22 points to 10. Rangataua opened the scoring with a penalty goal by R. Parkinson, but hefore half-time J. Ririnui, E. Ake, P. Bidois and B. Bidois each scored for Te Puna, one try being converted by J. Ririnui, making the half time score: Te Puna. 14, Rangataua, 3. Tn the second half J. Ririnui and I. Tnngitu scored and Grey converted one try, making Te Puna's total 22 M. Rhodes scored for Rangataua and Harnwera dropped a, field goal, bringing Rangataua's tally to 10. In the serond half a nice passing movement by West saw Craig score, which made the score 7—all, and the game thus finished in a draw. United and Karancahake played an evenly-contested game.
