A DRAWN GAME

MOUNT ALBERT IMPROVES In a well-contested game on No. 2 ground Mount Albert showed improved form to draw with Newton, each team scoring 22 points. Newton missed several good opportunities in the first half, but Mount Albert offered a strong resistance to every attack. The Mount Albert backs played better football than in their earlier games. The forwards were well matched and in the loose Mount Albert was a little the better set. From set scrums Mount Albert won the ball, although Martin, | the halfback, was given a lot of latitude.

The second half was _ particularly well contested, and Newton did most of the attacking. Its backs, however, missed several good scoring chances by holding on when support offered. At one stage Newton was ten points in arrears and finished well to equalise the score. The tempers of the forwards became frayed in the second half, and following a Newton forward, Quirke, being ordered off, there were several incidents of illegal play. Franich played a good game at centre threequartcr for Newton, but frequently spoiled good movements by holding on too long. Brady was in good form on the wing and scored two fine trios. He has the pace and determination to make a good scoring back. E. Brimble was perhaps the best back and made some nice openings for the threequarters. W. Brimble. a younger brother, played n good game behind the pack and was never afraid to open up the play. Young, five-eighths, was prominent on attack, but kicked a little too much. Dempsey played a sound game at fullback, getting through a lot of useful work. Crooks, who played in the cuitain-raiaer, was also prominent on the wing. Johnson was easily the best of the Newton forwards. He was in every attacking movement, and only has to learn to pass the ball in the loose to have representative prospects. Lunn and Pope were also good. Morrissey was sound at fullback for Mount Albert B. Schultr played with more dash than usual on the wing. The five-eighths, Hassan and J. Schultz, were good on attack, while Martin had to do a lot of stopping behind the pack, and was never afraid to go down to the powerful Newton paek. Gunning. Shadbolt and Flanagan were the pick of a hard-working pack. For Mount Albert McNeil (2). B. Schultz and Allen scored tries. Morrissey converted three times and kicked two penalty goals. For Newton Brady (3). Lunn, Johnson and E. Brimble scored tries. W. Brimble converted two tries. Mr. S. Billman wag referee.
