RICHMOND EXTENDED
DEVONPORT UNLUCKY In one of the most exciting games seen this season Richmond, the senior champions, narrowly defeated Devonport. which was a little unlucky not to score the winning try. Within a few minutes of the final bell Devonport often pressed Richmond, and the crowo enjoyed many thrilling moments in the second half. The first half was evtinly contested and Richmond led by 7 points to 3 at the interval. The Devonport backs played good football in the second half and a splendid try by Donald, gave Devonport supporters reason to rejoice From two penalty kicks, in good positions, Milicich missed the goal points.^ Devonport. besides losing R. Smith in the first half, lost A. Smith in the second, and played a man short for fifteen minutes. The Richmond backs were bustled into making mistakes by the Devonport forwards, who played fine football. A great tackle by Cooke in the last minute checked Hall from scoring what looked the winning try. The Devonport wing was hurled back when jusi over the goal line. E. Mincham played a splendid game at centre-threequarter and was the best b'ack for Richmond. Late in the second half he made a beautiful opening and was unlucky not to score, Beautiful fielding by Cooke was a feature of the game. He was more prominent on attack than usual and_ frequently raced the backs j n f°. position. Couper made a good impression in his orat game of League, his try being a really good effort. Powell was frequently caught in possession behind the pack. A little more variety in his play would have assisted the five-eighths on attack. Lawless, Satherley and Telford were the pick of the Richmond forwards. Tetley was also prominent. E. Scott and Hall were the best of the Devonport backs. Rhodes got through good work on defence. Cowan, the halfback, played an improved game. The Devonport forwards played good football and more than held their own against a powerful pack. Donald and Simpson were frequently prominent in the loose, the former being particularly good at tackling. Hunt and Milicich, both light forwards, played splendid games. . , , For Richmond tries were scored by McNeil and Couper. and Satherley kicked two penalty goals. Cowan. Donald and Scott scored tries for Devonport. Mr. W. Simpson was referee.
