DAVIS CUP CONTEST
NEW ZEALAND TEAM MATCH AGAINST AUSTRALIANS LONDON, M it 1 The only persons to welcome the members of the Australian Davis Cup team an their arrival at the station at Bournemouth to-day were officials of th® Lawn Tennis Association and E. D. Andrews (Manawatu), captain of the New Zealand team.
Andrews announced that, A. 0. Stedirtan (Auckland) and C. E. Malfroy (Wellington) would piny in thu singles; against Australia at Eastbourne. The doubles pair had not been chosen yet. Andrews has recovered from his sprained, ankle.
The New Zealand team is being coached in London. Tbe Australians Trill go to Eastbourne on May 4 or 5 to practise for the Davis Cup tie.
The choice of Stedaian and Malfroy for the singles iu the Davis (hip congest was the obvious one as Andrews is not up to his best form. Stedinan has been playing well of late and gave a good display against Austin in the second round of the hard courts championships at Bournemouth. Last year Stedman and Malfroy played in the doubles '
ivnd were successful in winning; against Czeeho-Slovakia in this contest, although New Zealand was defeated by ; : our matches to one. Stedman Trill make 'lis first appearance in Davis Cup Mingles and thoroughlv deserves seleeiion. Malfroy, who only recently relumed to England, won his first-round match at Bournemouth.
