NAVAL APPOINTMENT
THE AFRICAN STATION REAR-ADMIRAL TOTTENHAM (Received Mny 2. 6.5 p.m.) British Wireless RUGBY, May 1 Rear-Admiral F. L, Tottenham has been appointed commander-in-chief of the African station in Succession to Vice-Admiral Sir R. G. R. Evans, famous as "Evans of the Broke" and as a member of Scott's Antarctic expedition which he commanded after Scott's death in 1917. He wasi in command of the destroyer Broke which, with the Swift, met and defeated six German destroyers. Rear-Admiral Francis Loftus Tottenham was born in August, 1880. He entered the Royal Navy in 1895 and served on the staff of Rear-Admiral Sir Douglas Gamble for the re-organisation of the Turkish navy, 1909-11. By 1914 he had attained the rank of commander and he served throughout the war, being mentioned in despatches and awarded a C.B.E. He was promoted captain in 1918 and served on the Inter-Allied Naval Armistice Commission and Commission oi: Control in Germany, 1918-20. From 1920 to 1922 he commanded H.M S. Delhi. He was naval attache at Washington, 1922-25, and commanded H.M.S. Excellent, 1926-27, and the Rodney, 1928-29. He was RearAdmiral commanding the 3rd cruiser squadron, 1982-33.
