HASTINGS CANDIDATES

THE FINAL GALLOPS BIG DOCIK AND CUDDLE HUNTING STAR'S GOOD EFFORT [BY TEIiEGJtAPH—OWN CORRESPONDENT] HASTINGS, Thursday The Hastings tracks were on the dead side this morning when the final gallops took place, but with a drying wind the going should be perfect for Saturday's races. Silver Song, with an advantage in tho weights, shaded Sunny Maid over half a niilo ill aOjs. Lacquer took the same time when finishing five lengths ahead of Tupai. Slurred Ribbon, giving away a stone in weight, was goiny slighlly better than Peggy Defoe over a mile in 1.17, with Lady Wessex be.iten off. Shcnunikidn and Heliotype did seven furlongs in 1.3 Hi, with the former holding a lot in reserve;. Swift and Sure was not extended when running six furlongs in 1.19}.

Good Hunting nnd Royal Mimic were on terms over, five furlougs in G4)s, a very fair effort for th-e latter, who i 3 engaged in the maiden rac»

An interesting gallop took place between three cup candidates, Cuddle (R. Marsh), Big I.look .(P. Atkins), and Speed («T. Leuch.l over a mile. Big Dook ran iii behind the other pair over the first half-mile in 522 s, but in the straight when Speed begun to Singer Big Dook run up alongside Cuddle and the pair cmne home together in 1.445, ,ii very fine gallop. Solaria was much too good for Abbey Feale over five furlongs in iVlss

Two well-fancied maiden candidates. Royal Feast and Sybil Song, took 50}s for half si jnili?, with the former going the better at the finish. Mona Lisa was doing her best to cover the same distance in 52}s, Soho. loafing over the last t'.vo furlongs, took 525. Joy Stick, after being five lengths to the bad coming into the straight, beat Begorrah and War Parade to the winning post in 525, for four furlongs. Gainsfid and Memnon were not seriously troubled to run seven furlong 3 in 1.84.'

Hunting Star was very wide out all the way, but finished on termu with Passion Flower over five furlongs in 64is. Hunting Star went impressively and will be fancied for the six-furlong hack race on Saturday. Warvune and Bonnie Song took 51s for half a mile, with Warvane having the belter of the gallop. The Grasper. Royal Banyuet, Di-umpeel, Hukemanu and Dusky Crown were in that order at the end of six furlongs, run in 1.205, with The Grasper doing it most comfortably. High Grader stave a brilliant display of hurdling over four schooling hurdles. Cotsfield also impressed in a round of six hurdles, while in a similar task Winter Sport had had enough at the last fence. Count Will onyx showed a big improvement in his jumping when doing a round, but the puce was never on. AWAPUNI COMMENTS EARLY ENGAGEMENTS RETURN OF LEGATEE [by telegraph —ows correspondent] PALMERSTON NORTH, Thursday W. E. Pino will attend the Hawera meeting, where he will ride Refresher. S. Anderson has been engaged for Inflation in the Hawke's Bay Cup. He will be associated with Snowball in the maiden race. L. H. Jones lias gone through to Hawera, where lie will ride Timorous, hut his fellow-stable apprentice, G. Tattersall, will be at Hastings, whore he will ride Mesurina, Sunny Sky and Shirred Ribbon. R. Legatee, who ran third in the A.J.C. Sires Produce. Stakes when ridden by K. Voitre, is back at Awapuni, his trainer, G. W New having returned by the Monowai on Tuesday. When Legatee contested the two-year-old event at Randwick he was suffering from a sore mouth, aud his rider s'i'ted after the race that he did not commence reallj to galW until after two furlongs had been traversed. He was then lying last and was Becond last when they turned for home, yi 'jp finished full of running to take third money. Australian critics have selected Legatee as a typical Derby horse New is of the opinion that Gay Idea and Garro, who hue beaten Legatees in the A.J.C. race, are two:. splendid colts, and in being beaten by them, Legatee was far from disgraced. The Awapuni mentor further considered that Bimilla ii< the best of her sax ano in his opinion the New Zealand two-year-olds are not as brilliant as the Easter Plate winner up to u six-fur-longs' distance. NOTES FROM EVERYWHERE TRACK AND STABLE GOSSIP H. N. Wiggins will be riding at the Egmont Racing Club's meeting at Hawera to-morrow and on Monday. His mounts on the first day will include Trishna, Queen Nona, Royal Secret and. King Mestor. The Great Northern St. Leger winner, Kelly, appears to have taken no harm from his racing at Ellerslie and Avondale and carries a bright appearance. He and his stable mate Fleetwind are at present on the easy list. Fieetwind will not race again this season. R. S. Bug by has temporarily reduced his team, which has been steadily growing :or some time past. Rulamit has been returned to Wanganui, while Impasto and Cabente have been sent to their owners' properties to spell. Gay Marigold, is also enjoying a well-deserved rest.

J Sharkey, who piloted Capella Abbey to victory in the Waikato Hunt Cup at Cambridge last spring, will again ride the Ouin A>bey gelding in tfio Lgmont Steeplechase at Hawera to-morrow. Capellm Abbey has been responsible for i-.ome solid woik at Hastings lately and )ii evidently in sood racing trim.

The three-year-old Sir Abb is attending the tracks regularly at, Ellerslie, but his tasks since ho raced at the autumn meetmg have been of a gentle :iature. Ho. lightened up after "lis race in th,: heavy .going m the Autumn Handicap, but is picking up a am •nicely It is unlikely that Sll Abb will called upon to race again this season.
