FIFTY YEARS AGO
TRAMWAY DIFFICULTIES
Confui >ion and delay were caused' in Wellesley Street 50 years ago when two horse-trams proceeding in opposite directions would meet on the single track. The installation ,pf a new signalling system, designed 'to obviate the trouble was announced in the following item "* which appeared in the New Zealand Hkkalu pf May 2, 1885: " Owing to the fitting up of the Kaino Company')? stables not being sufficiently advanced to accommodate the number of horses which the Tramway Company intend!! to station there, the improved tram neirvice will not be inaugurated until Monday week. As a further precaution to promote safety on the liV.ellesley Street grade and prevent delay in the despatch of the up cars on the evenuig service until the up line is ready, a night lamp signalling system has been inaugurated. By this system it is at once known whether the upper end of Welles! ey Street is clear, and if so, the up car, instead of waiting, proceeds at once."
