DICKENS FELLOWSHIP

MR. PAUL HARRIS WELCOMED The founder of Rotary, Mr. Paul Harris, of Chicago, and Mrs. Harris were guests of the Auckland branch of the Dickens Fellowship last night, and they were accorded a Dickensian welcome by the president, Mr. T. Clarkson. Mr. Harris, who is a prominent member of the Dickens Fellowship in Chicago, said that when he and Mrs. Harris were married one of the first considerations was the selection o( books and Dickens' works were among their first choice. Night after night, he said, at their fireside in Chicago, thev had read to each other all the author's works, some of them many times over. Professional men in America, ho said, found that there were times when they required the stimulant provided by the humour ol Dickens and it was impossible to imagine a lover of Dickens without feeling that he was a person one would desire to know. The programme, which was in the charge of Mr. J. W. KVal.v, consisted of the following readings from "Pickwick Papers":—"The Pickwiokians attend a Review," Mr, J. E. Green; "The Pickwiokians Meet tlie Wardlos," Mrs. 1;. G. Morris; "On the Road to Dingley Dell," Mr. T. Clarkson; "A Card Party at Manor Farm," Mrs. J. W. Keaiy: "The Convict's Return," Mr. G. S. Bullen.
