ROTARY CLUB LUNCHEON
ADDRESS ON POWER OF SONG VISIT OF MR. PAUL HARRIS The influence of song on peoples through the ages was dealt with by Mr. W. H. Dixon in an address to the Auckland Rotary Club at its luncheon at Milne and Chovce's Reception Hall yesterday. "In travail and in triumph song has played a large part in the lives of people," said the speaker. "Songs indicate what people are feeling and enduring and what their aspirations are." Songs had bedn used to work up fervour for war and to express grief after war. Over 6000 years ago the Egyptians sang hymns to the sun, which was their god. and even to-day song played an important part in religious ritual.
The visitors at the luncheon included Mr. A. H. Gaze (Melbourne), Mr. H. Lightband (Christchurch), Mr. D. F. Moncur (Wellington), Mr. R. P. Spedding (Rotorua), Mr. H. C. Rishworth, Mr. R. L. Drummond and Mr. A. Franks (Whangarei). Mr. Amos Thompson was elected a member of the club.
The president, Mr. G. L. Taylor, outlined the arrangements for the forthcoming visit of Mr. Paul Hurris. founder of the Rotary movement. He said that Mr. and Mrs. Harris would arrive in Auckland on the evening of Wednesday, May 1. The next morning they would bo tendered a civic reception, followed by a Rotary mid-day luncheon meeting. On the Friday morning Mrs. Harris would bo entertained at morning tea by wives of Rotarians and in the evening a gathering would be held at the residence of Mrs. C. Rhodes.
The president also made a plea that Rotary club members should do their utmost toward the proposal to be discussed at a public meeting to-night of forming an Auckland branch of the New Zealand Crippled Children's Society. He said New Zealand Rotary clubs had taken an important part in the care of crippled children in the past year or so.
