THE KING'S JUBILEE
AUCKLAND CELEBRATIONS PUBLIC HOLIDAY ON MAY 6 Preliminary arrangements in connection with the celebrations in Auckland of the King's silver jubilee were authorised by the City Council last evening. The council decided to accede to the request made by the Prime Minister, the JU. Hon. G. W. Forbes;, that this historic event be suitably recognised by the declaration of a holiday on May 6 and that ceremonial functions be arranged for that day, With suitable decorations and illuminations in the city. On the motion of the Mayor, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, it was decided thai; May 6 be a paid holiday for all council employees and that employers be invited to show the same consideration to their workpeople. The matter of arranging ceremonial functions, including a display of street lighting and decorations, aiad requesting business people and the citizens generally to decorate their, buildings Mas referred to the Finance Committee, with power to act. The council decided to accept an invitation from Archbishop Averill for the Mayor and councillors tc .be present at the official national service of thanksgiving in St. Matthew's Uhurch on May 6. '
