MAORI AMITY
WELCOME TO NGAPUHIS SCENE AT WHAKAREWAREWA «. ' [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] ' ROTORUA. Thursday One of the favourable reactions of the recent Waitangi celebrations has been the reconciliation of old inter-tribal differences. Whakarewarewa has just witnessed a striking demonstration of the reality of the new spirit. Yesterday afternoon 240 members of the Ngapuhi tribe, from North Auckland, arrived at Whakarewarewa on their way to the Mormon convention at Wairoa, Hawke s Bay. They received -a' tumultuous Welcome from the Arawas —a welcome reminiscent of the best in Maori tradition and for which the most thorough preparations had been made. The visitors were scrupulous in first paying respect to the memory of the late paramount chief, Mita Taupopoki, whose grave they visited and for whom they at once held a tangi remarkable for 'the fervour and" eloquence of the speeches. The tangi was followed by foasthig, hakas, songs and orations, which continued far into the night. The Ngapubis had a fitting farewell this morning, the wahiues giving to loud In mentation as the fleet of 1.1 lorries and motor-cars left for the long journey through the ITrewera. Jhe convention at Wairoa is to last a ■week
