GIFT TO HOSPITAL

AUSTRALIAN CLUB COT FITTED FOR SOLARIUM The importance of the solarium in the treatment of disease was stressed by a number of speakers yesterday, when the women's branch of the Auckland Australian Club presented a special cot to the Auckland Hospital for use in its solarium. The presentation was made on behalf of the club by Mrs. A. St. Clair Brown, and accepted on behalf of the Hospital Board by Mr. W. Wallace. chairman of the board. "With the presentation of these cots you are directly contributing to the crippled children's fund,' 1 said DrJ Keith Macky. "The scheme is intimately connected with sun treatment, and it would be regrettable if we failed to follow the splendid lead of Lord Nuffield and Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Wilson." The difficulties experienced in giving children sun treatment at the Auckland Hospital in the past had been great. It had been tried on three previous occasions, both inside and outside of the wards. The miraculous cures effected in the Swiss mountain health resort of Leysin, under the world-famous Dr. Rollier, were described by Mr. Spence, who had spent a year there. Dr. Rollier had given a 'message to New Zealanders that should give much encouragement. "After Switzerland, there is no other country where conditions for sun treatment are more perfect than in New Zealand," he had said. ( The new cot was fitted up for the inspection of the donors, and its principle explained by Dr. Macky, who pointed out that it was to a large extent a miniature solarium in itself. It was modelled on those specially designed by Dr. Rollier himself for use in Switzerland. A screen strapped to poles at each corner of the cot provided protection against the wind, while an adjustable screen kept the strong su.n from the patient's head. The whole attachment was simple and easily handled, and a number of cots was already fitted in the same manner.
