VALUE OF RELIEF WORK
QUARTER OP THE COST GRAMMAR BOARD DISCUSSION EXPENDITURE ON GROUNDS Some discussion occurred at a meeting of the Auckland Grammar School Board yesterday afternoon when the secretary, Mr. C. G. Tisdall, sought information as to the added value of the Mount Albert Grammar School grounds as a result of the improvements mnde by relief workers between May, 1931, and the beginning of this month, when work was discontinued. Mr. Tisdall said he had to make a return to the Government as to the value of the various properties held by the board. He wanted to know the value of the work done on the grounds. The total cost had been £39,914. Professor A. P. W. Thomas, chairman of the board: I think a fair estimate of the increase in value would be £IO,OOO. Mr. A. St. Clair Brown: We have to tell people that we have no money for a hostel, but here we go spending £39,000 on work that is obviously worth only £IO,OOO. Professor Thomas: The money has been spent in tho relief of unemployment.
Mr. Brown: I think the money could have been spent in a much more useful way.
It was decided to instruct the secretary to state in his returns that tho work was worth £IO,OOO.
