PHOTOGRAPHIC CONTEST PRIZES. TOTALLING £39 CLOSING DATE APRIL 2 Tho announcement that the directors of The Weekly News are holding another photographic competition is sure to bo received with enthusiasm by both amateur and professional photographers throughout New Zealand.

It will be the twenty-seventh contest of this naturo conducted by the journal, and each one has been extremely popular. A total of £39 is offered in prizes, under conditions which provide for payment for all entries published —with the exception of prize-winning photograplißi —at the rate of 5s each for whole-plate and 4s each for smaller prints. The chief object of these competitions is to encourage New Zealand photographers to produce tho class of picture required by modern illustrated journals. Incidentally, thoy have been the means of discovering a great deal of talent among those who make a hobby of camera work, while pro-fessionals-have had their reputations enhanced to a remarkable degree by the publicity gained through prizewinning and other pictures published in The Weekly News, a paper which is second to none of. its kind in the world. Details of the Prizes All other countries are familiar with and acknowledge the high quality of New Zealand's photographic work, but the opinion is held that even a higher standard can be reached, and The Weekly News desires to help on this progressive movement. For outdoor work the wonderful climate of this Dominion offers splendid opportunities, and the present season is undoubtedly the best time of the year to make good pictures.* The competition is divided into five classes, which give a fair chance of winning a prize to all who possess cameras. The closing date is April 2. Packets of photographs posted on that day will be accepted. The following are the various classes antV the amounts of prizes offered: — 1. A New Zealand Landscape (with or without figure). First prize, £6; second prize, £3; third prize, £2; fourth prize, £l. 2. A New Zealand Seascape (with or without figure). First prize, £5; second prize, £2; third prize, £l. 3. New Zealand Adult Figure Study (European or Maori). First prize, £3; second prize, £2; third prize, £l. 4. New Zealand Child Figure Study (European or Maori). First prize, £3,; second prize, £2; third prize, £l. 5. Farm, Station or Bush Life Scene. First priae, £4; second prize, £2; third prize, £l. Conditions of Contest No photograph previously published will be allowed to compete. The negatives, but not necessarily the print, must in all cases be the work of the competitor. Competitors should remember that small views, although allowed to compete, are not so suitable for reproduction as half-plates or full plates. In awarding the prizes the suitability of the photograph for reproduction will be taken into consideration. Glossy black and white prints are the most suitable. The Weekly News will have the first right to reproduce any photographs sent in for competition. Such photographs, apart from prize-winning prints, will be paid for immediately after publication at the rate of 5s for the whole-plate and 4s for all pictures smaller than Vvhole-plates. All pictures entered in the competition remain the property of the paper until such times as they are published. General Interest Good typical pictures of general interest are preferable to those of merely local interest. In sending photographs, prints should be sent flat if possible. Particulars of the subject and the name and address of the competitor must be written on the back of every print, in pencil, without in any way damaging it. All photographs must be addressed to "Photographic Competition Editor" of The Weekly News, and the class for which it is entered should be clearly marked on the back of the photograph as well as on the outside of the v The results will be published in The Weekly News on an early date after the day of closing. These conditions will be strictly adhered to, and the receipt of prints from a competitor will be taken as sufficient guarantee that he or she is willing to abide by them.
