As a result of representations made to him bv the unemployed in Auckland, Mr. M. J. Savage, M.P., Leader of the Opposition, sent a telegram to the Minister of Employment, the Hon. A. Hamilton, yesterday, protesting against increased hours of work. The telegram was as follows: "Representatives of over 500 relief workers in the Waitemata County waited on mo to-day to protest against extension of hours of ? labour from 40 hours to 47 hours per week. Men working less than 47 hours will receive payment only for the hours worked. It is stated in the instructions that no variation in these hours is to bo permitted without special authority from, the Labour Department. All the elements of a serious situation are present, and unless immediate action is taken to see that men are paid in full for original weekly hours of work chaos is inevitable. The men will be paid to-morrow morning."
