DISGUSTED WITH WORLD

RELEASED PRISONER RETURNS TO ISOLATION Times Cable LONDON, Jan. 10 The Paris correspondent of the Times states that a former naval lieutenant, Benjamin Ullmo, who was found guilty of treason, was pardoned after 15 years' solitary confinement on Devil's Island, followed by 11 years at Cayenne. The man declares that after six months' freedom he is disgusted with the modern world, and is returning to Cayenne. Ullmo criticises the "lower moral level," also the "immeasurable stupidity of humanity, which thinks itself superior." He says he has seen no sign of real progress, but he has seen a terrible spiritual weakening and a lowering of conscience and intelligence. The News Chronicle's Paris correspondent states that Ullmo sailed from Le Havre watched by Madelaine Poirier, who, although she was a stranger to him, worked for his release and met him on his return. Ullmp returns to Cayenne as bookkeeper for a settler among the paroled prisoners.

In 1908 Ullmo sold some plans to a foreign Power in order to lavish gifts on his sweetheart.
