CLEANING TAPESTRY

A PROFESSIONAL METHOD This method of cleaning tapestry is used by many professional dry cleaners. It will remove stains and freshen up anything in the nature of wool and cottoil fabrics and so on. Take a quart bottle and pour into it a pint of warm water, in which must be dissolved three tablespoonfuls of good soap shavings. Then add the following chemicals separately, shaking vigorously after pouring in each one: 4oz. to Boz. turpentine, Boz. ammonia, 6oz. sulphuric ether, 4oz. benzine, 4oz. spirits of camphor, 2oz. peppermint oil, loz. balsam fir, loz. oil of wintergreen. When all this has been thoroughly shaken together, pour out one part into another bottle and add sixteen parts of petrol, a little at a time, shaking frequently and vigorously. The emulsion will then resemble a thin cream, and will be ready for use. Have at hand a piece of cloth as near the colour of the tapestry as possible. Hub the tapestry with a little clean water and allow to dry before using the solution. When applying this do not rub too heavily, as this might cause a slight discolouration on light fabric. Exert plenty of patience, and do not rush the work, as some marks dissohe very slowly.
