AFTERNOON RECEPTION

VALUE OF RECIPROCITY An enjoyable party was given yesterday afternoon in the Milne and Choyce Hall by Mr. Robert H. Nesbitt, Australian Trade Commissioner. The large room had been most attractively arranged with bowls of deep crimson and tango-coloured zinnias placed 011 stands and on the stage, to which palms and foliage plants made an excellent foil. On the tea tables were arranged tall amber-coloured crystal vases of gerberas in much the same lovely colouring. Mr. Nesbitt. was assisted in receiving by Mr. .lames Payne, assistantAustralian Trade Commissioner, and Mrs. Payne, the latter wearing a tunic frock of black marocain lightly flecked with grey, and a black beret caught with a quill. During the afternoon the Milne and Choyce Trio .played some delightful numbers. Tea with ices was served.

A brief speech was made at the end of the afternoon by Mr. Nesbitt, who told his guests that ho was looking lor-ward-to his stay in New Zealand during the next five years—the term ot his appointment." There was plenty of scope for goodwill between Australia and New Zealand, he added, and although political reciprocity between the two countries was somewhat chequered, the personal goodwill between the people was unimpaired. He hoped that when the Ministerial representatives of both countries next met something really tangible would lie done to bring about a closer relationship. New Zealand had much to offer Australia and vice versa. Owing to its size, New Zealand had not the same scope that Australia had, but, 011 tho other hand, it possessed the most wonderful scenery, which Australians should certaiuly come and see. New Zealanders had every right, after they had seen other countries, to say when they returned, "Thank God for our own country."

In replying to Mr. Nesbitt, the Hon. Eliot Davis also stressed the enormous business potentialities to be gained by a closer relationship between tho two countries.
