RIOTING IN INDIA

POLICE FIRE ON MOB

TRAGIC CONSEQUENCES

BOMBAY. Jan. 9 A message from Kolapore, 144 miles south of Poona, states that nine Mahommedans were killed, including two women, and 20 others were injured when a party of policemen fired on a mob in Ichalkaranji, a small State, which is a dependant of Kolapore. The shooting followed a trivial dispute between Mahommedans and Government officials over the proposed removal of some sacred trees. The Mahommedans threatened an officer, whereupon the arrest of the leader was ordered.

The mob refused to surrender the leader, and the police fired blank cartridges. Then the mob of 300 attacked with stones,' sickles and axes. The police fired into the demonstrators, who dispersed, leaving the dead and wounded.
