TITHES PROBLEM
NON-PAYMENT IN KENT PLIGHT OF v DEFAULTERS BEHIND LOCKED DOORS # MANY DISTRAINT ORDERS By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received January 10, 9.35 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 10 The chairman of the. Tithe Payers' Association at Ashford, Kent, Mr. H. Roseveare, states that* between 700 and 800 distraint orders for, non-payment of tithes are, out against farmers in that district. The farmers in question are living in terror behind locked doors and are not speaking to strangers except through the letter-boxes or upper windows. Many attempts have been made to seize furniture, says Mr. Koseveare. The tithe problem, he adds, is emptying the churches and ruining agriculture. Already 1,000,000 acres have been vacated.
