NEW COMET FOUND

MOVING DUE NORTH ADVICE FROM MELBOURNE [by telegraph OWN correspondent! WELLINGTON, Thursday A telegram announcing the discovery of a new comet "was received to-day by the Dominion Observatory from the Melbourne Observatory. The comet is a telescopic object, but should be visible in moderate instruments, those, for instance, of apertures from three to eight inches. Generally, several comets of this kind are discovered each year, but last year was unusual in that no comets were found. This is the first comet found this year.

The comet was discovered on January 8, at 18 hours 28 minutes, Greenwich mean time. Its right ascension was then C hours 59 minutes 48 seconds and its declinat>on 51 degrees 3 minutes south. Its daily motions are in right ascension 16 seconds of time, increasing, and in declination moving 1 degree 43 minutes north. Its magnitude is 10 and it has a diffused appearance. Nothing is reported about its tail. The details given place the comet as not far away, 10 degrees approximately from the bright star Achernar, and almost exactly Qne degree north of the third magnitude star Beta Phoenicis. That is its approximate position tonight. It is moving almost exactly due north.
