MONTE CARLO DRAMA
GAMBLER'S LAST THROW LUCK TURNS TOO LATE OVERTAKEN BY DEATH (Received January !). 5.5 p.m.) LONDON". -Tan. 9 The News Chronicle's Monte Carlo correspondent relates the following strange storv. An Englishman who was "plunging" at the gaming tables was consistently unlucky until he lost £2OOO. Thereupon he placed his last counter on No. 28 and buried his head in his hands. Twenty-eight won, but he ignored his winnings, which the croupier pushed toward him. representing 35 times the amount of his original stake. The lucky counter remained on No. 28, which won again, resulting in the recovery of £IOOO of the gambler's losses. Still he did not respond to the croupier's touch. Then a woman in the next seat petulantly asked the man not to lean against her. He did not reply so she rose to her feet, whereupon he rolled on to the floor dead.
