POLLS AND ELECTIONS
PREPARATION OF ROLLS LOAN PROPOSALS THIS MONTH Arrangements are being made by the city returning officer, Mr. P. F. Notley, for the loan poll which is to be held on January 23. The city ratepayers will be asked to sanction the raising of a loan of £68,000 for the development and improvement of certain reserves and roads as a subsidised relief work, on which the workers will receive standard rates of pay, and a further loan proposal of £27,400 to finance the renovations to the Victoria Arcade building and to provide funds for compensation on expiring city leases. The supplementary ratepayers' roll necessary for this loan poll closed yesterday ajid is now being printed, while the ballot papers also are in the hands of the printer. Altogether, 26,000 ratepayers will be entitled to vote on these issues.
The staff of the city returning officer is also engaged on the preparation of the main district electors' roll in readiness for the municipal elections on May 1. This roll, which will contain about 42,000 names, will be closed on January 31, but further names will be added to the supplementary roll, which will remain open until April 3.
