MEETING AT THAMES

OPENING PROGRAMME

THE GOLD FIELDS CUP

REVIEW OF THE FIELDS

The Thames Jockey Club's annual meeting will be opened at Parawai to-day. when tho chief events will be the Goldfields Cup and the Flying Handicap. Very useful fields are engaged, and the prospects of some interesting racing are bright. The course has benefited considerably by recent rain and the going should be excellent. The win and place system of betting will be in operation. Following are details of the fields, with a review* of the prospects in each | race bv " Archer 11.50—TAPU HANDICAP, Of £55 and sweepstake of £1 each; 6 fur. et. lb. 6t. lb. Mazir - 9 0 Joyzell .77 Alignment . . 810 Air Lassie . 7 7 True Measure . 8 7 Nahlin .... 7 7 Whirling -.84 Enlightenment 7 7 Sir Abb . . 712 Stallnnge Trackman . .• . 7 11 Thorne ... 7 7 Guy Athlone . 7 10 Taniwharau . 7 7 Wahine Beihi. 7 9 Hymel .... 7 7 Acranna • .78 Winlona . . 77 Bracket: Stallange Thorne tnd Toriiwharau. The topweight Mazir displayed distinct promise when he ran second at To Rapa in November, and Alignment is a very smart gilloper who will be having his first race for some time. True Measure made a good showing at Te Awamutu, but Whirling is an unlikely starter. Trackman is a likely sort, who lost his>chauce at his last start by getting away badly. Sir Abb appears to have made a little improvement and Gay Athlone shewed plenty of speed as a two-year-old last season, when she did not run on too well. Air Lassie has galloped well on the tracks, and the likeliest of the others may be Acranna', Enlightenment and Nahlin. Popular fancies may be MAZIR. AIR LASSIE. TRACKMAN. 12.35—BOROUGH HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, Of £65: 9 fur. et. lb st. lb. Grand Talk ..10 10 Master Musk 9 0 First Lap . . 10 5 .Royal Winton 9 0 On Approval . 9 0 Valcuir ... 9 0 Don't Lap ..90 Auburn Rose . 9 0 boianio ... 9 0 Lack of recent racing may be against Grand Talk, who will have to be reckoned with if prcduced fit. First Lap has run some very creditable races this season and should have excellent prospects. On Approval, if she reproduces tho form she displayed at Paeroa, should make a forward showing. and Don't Lap should also be in the picture. Maiiter Musk stavs fairly well, fijd Royal Winton is a likely improver. Solanio and Valcuir have no recent form and Auburn Rose has yet to show her worth. Soma who may find favour are' FIRST LAP. MASTER MUSK. ROYAL WINTON. I.2O—FLYING HANDICAP, Of £9O; 6 fur. st. lb. st. lb. King Ford ..80 King Mestor . 7 0 Murgatoon ..80 Lifeguard ..70 Hampton Park 7 10 Lia Fail ... 7 0 Limes ... 7 1 Sirona .... 7 0 King Ford's forward running in better company at the surimer carnival at Ellerslie an excellent chance for him. Mungatoon would bo preferred over a longer distance and Hampton Park has not raced for some time. King Mestor and Lifeguard are lightweights with good chances and other possibilities are Lia Fail and Sirona. Limex i 3 an unlikely starter. The main fancies may include KING FORD. LIFEGUARD. KING MESTO:i. 2,S—PIPIROA HANDICAP, Of £6O; 6 fur. st.. lb. et, lb Instalment . 8 10 Rosy ... 7 0 Mungacre ..87 True Measure . 7 0 Blandford ..80 Valreina ... 7 0 Gay Egypt . . 7 12 Mustang ... 7 0 Prince Acre . . 711 Lord Willonyx 7 0 Lady Zinnia . 7 8 Boatsong ... 7 0 Ballymoney ..78 Mountain Tybalt .... 7 6 Breeze ... 7 0 Day Wind . . ' 7 6 Firebrick ... 7 0 Brackets: Blandford and Prince Acre, Tybalt and Firebrick. The topweight. Instalment, has no recent form, but is a very smart beginner. MungBcre is good in the class when fit, while Blandford and Princo Acre make a solid bracket, both being useful. Gay Egypt displayed marked promise last season, but has been difficult' to train. However, if he is ready, he should beat more than will beat him. Ballymoney should have excellent prospects in the clas3 and so should Tybalt, whose running at Ellerslie was very encouraging. Boat Song has been working well and the best of the others may be Lady Zinnia, Day Wind, True Measure and Lord Willonyx. The best supported may be BALLYMONEY. TYBALT. BOAT SONG.

2.SS—COLDFI ELDS CUP HANDICAP, Of £150; li miles 6t. lb. st. lb. Mungatoon ..90 Alloy .... 7 4 Royal Artist . 8 7 Limes .... 7 1 King's Archer 8 2 First Lop ..70 Lady Spy ..81 Lagoon ... 7 0 Trishna ... 7 10 Bcinny Gay . 7 0 Monanui .... 7 9 Hikutaia ... 7 0 "Whakapara . 7 7 Bracket: Mungatoon and Lagoon. The race bears a very open aspect. Mungatoon is solid, but may have enough with P.O. Royal Artist i 3 capable of a good performance, but liis latest showings have not been encouraging. Kind's Archer should bo ciual to creditable effort, but belter prospect# may be Monanui and Lady Spy. who should run the distance solidly with their handy weights. Trinhna and Whakapara have both won at a mile and a-quarter and Alloy is always dangerous on . country courses. Lagoon and Hikutaia arc improvers who may run well with their light weights. Th« favourites may be MONANUI. LADY SPY, ALLOY.

3.4O—PARAWAI STAKES HANDICAP, Of £7O; two-year-olds; 5 fur. Of £7O; 5 fur. st. lb. st. lb. Velocipede ..86 Madelon . . . 7 2 Go'den Princess 8 5 Light Comedy 7 0 Johnnie Walls 7 5 Mafeking . . 7 0 King flight . 7 5 Ruapai . . . 7 U Application ..75 The only candidates with any form are Golden Princes 3, Light Comedy and \ elocipede, und they should account for the otliOis, several of whom, Johnnie Vv all?, King Plight, Application and Madelon have not »ace> i previously. Mafekhig and Ruapai hr.vo not yet shown any particular dasli and will require to do better than previously to win. Investors may show a preference for LIGHT COMEDY, GOLDEN PRINCESS. VELOCIPEDE. 4.2S—PURIRI HACK HANDICAP, Of £OS and sweepstake of £1 each; 7 fur. st. lb. , E! - '>>• Lagoon . ~.88 Miss Lu • .. Tbe topweights, Lagoon and Royal Dash, •hould both be capable of solid perform»nceis if started and the class should suit G ay Rose. Princo Acre should so veil and others with chances arc Lady Zinnia, Loyal -Secret, Air Lasfie and On Approval. Some who may find favour are GAY ROSE. TYBALT. MISS LIT.

5.1S HAURAKI PLAINS HANDICAP, Of £7O; 7 fur. st. lb. Bt - lb - King's Archer 9 0* Limex . - 1 * Lady Spy . . 813 King Mestor .7 / foolyxo ..,.85 Lia Fail ... 70 'Viakapara 7 1!)
