TRIBUTE TO MINISTER
THE LATE MR. MONCKTON SERVICE AT TAKAPUNA There was a large attendance at the memorial service held at St. Peter's Church, Takapuna, yesterday afternoon for the former vicar, the Kev. W. G. Monckton, whose remains were cremated at "YVaikumcte Cemetery later in the day. The service was conducted by the present vicar, tho Kev. R. Hailey Trill, and Archdeacon Mac Murray, who represented Archbishop Aver ill.
In an appreciative address, Archdeacon Mac Murray said the late Mr. Monckton was a man of rare scholastic attainments and wide sympathy, whose mission was tho gtudy of human problems. His qualities of taste and intellect assigned to him a conspicuous and influential position in the Auckland diocese. Ho brought a humane and liberal mind to the study of tho postwar world and his gift for popular exposition, both in tho press and from the pulpit, made tho result of his researches attractive and instructive to many. But he was a man who never ignored the vital moral issues involved, and to him tho study and solution of human problems was but the preparation for higher things. His object in life was to crystalise the difficulties confronting people and to offer pregnant suggestions for the creation of a saner spirit Ho despised insularity and sought to break down the barriers of prejudice through tho many moans at his command. Tho service concluded with the singing of the hymn "Abide With Me," and tho benediction, and the casket was carried from tho church while the congregation knelt in prayer. The pallbearers were Mr. C. Monckton, a cousin from Fiji, Mr. Linwood, Mr. A. Mulgan, representing the Auckland Star, Mr. 0. E. Archibald, representing the Auckland branch of tho League of Nations Union, Mr. W. Hall, representing St. Poter's Church, and Mr. C. H. Kingsi'ord, representing St. Paul's Church.
