TAUPIRI SWAMP DRAINS

PROGRESS WITH EXCAVATION SPEEDING-UF OF WORK [from ottr own correspondent] HAMILTON. Wednesday Good progress is being made with the work of excavating drains in the Taupiri swamp, and about 160 men are now engaged on the taking. Gangs arc employed on the Central, Eureka and Tauhei drains, on tho eastern outlet, and along the Upper Mangawara. A start has been made on the Tunawliakapeka drain. The two private contracts for the draining of tho Lower Mangawara are now nearly completed. Although progress was fairly slow during the winter, the work has been accelerated since tho coming of dry weather. Peat fires have been experienced, the most seriouß being at Eureka and the eastern outlet. However, these were suppressed before extensive damage was caused.
