BRITISH SAILORS' SOCIETY

The seamen visiting port during the festive season were well catered for by the local branch of the British Sailors' Society. On Boxing Day a number were taken 'for a day's picnicking, when games were held and a happy day spent. During the following week parties of men were taken out sight-seeing to the Museum, Mount Eden and to the Zoo, a number also being taken at different times to a private home to enjoy a little home life.

On New Year's Night a very successful high tea and concert were held. Toasts were honoured and a good programme provided by Mrs. T. Clark and friends. The Rev. G. Heighway gave an interesting talk to the men during the evening. All seamen visiting the "Rest" were given "ditty" bags filled with useful articles. These were made and donated by the women's societies of the various churches, and, in addition, a number of seamen's calendars, donated by Captain Carre, were distributed. A prominent feature of the nightly entertainments has been the obvious enjoyment of the seamen of an hour's singing of favourite hymns before closing. The catering for teas, etc., was greatly helped by donations and cakes, etc., by various friends.
