WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
Paengaroa.—Members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the late Miss Kelly who had been a valuable member of the institute. Arrangements were made for exhibiting flowers at the horticultural show at Te Puke. A competition for the best bowl of flowers was keenly contested. The roll call was " Uses for Lemons." Maketu.—-Several members were enrolled at a recent meeting. A vote of sympathy was passed to the family of the late Miss E. Kelly and a vote of thanks was extended to Mrs. R. McNaughton for the support she had given and the interest she had shown in the Maketu Institute. Arrangements for holding a Christmas tree were made for children of members under school age. Maori songs, which were greatly enjoyed, terminated the meeting. Demonstrations on basket weaving and dresscutting for outsizes were given. Mount Maunganui.—A meeting was held at the residence of Mrs. Halcombe. After general business was transacted a number of songs and recitations were given. A reading, " Ten Ways to Kill," was amusing. Competitions were fo/ the best frock made and worn by a member not to cost more than ten shillings. Pongakawa Valley.—A trophy competition was won by Mrs. Don for the best embroidered apron made from a< flourbag at a recent meeting. Demonstrations were for mats from waste string and types of darning. The competition was on hidden names of institute members and caused much amusement. A duet was sung by Mes<damos Don and Hanlon. The roll call was " A Handy Hint." Katikati. —Two new members were enrolled at'the last meeting of the institute. Delegates reported on the conference held at Matata and on the group meeting at Tauranga. _ The garden circle held an exhibition of flowers. and prizes were presented to the winners. The demonstration was on smocking and the roll call was " How to amuse children at a party. Naike.—The first monthly meeting of the institute, which was previously opened by Mrs. Robson, president of the Waikato Federation, was held in the Naike Hall. The committee was elected as follows: —President, Mrs. Frangos; secretary, Mrs. Griffin; treasurer, Mrs. Handley; committee, Mesdames Kerr, Rhind, Miller, Webster, Marshall and Miss Blomfield. The points competition was won by Miss Handley,l: Mrs. Kerr, 2. Mrs. Griffin and Mrs. Blomfield were tea hostesses.
