EMBARGO ON POTATOES
REQUEST FOR CONTINUANCE INTERESTS OF TASMANIA CANBERRA, Dec. 13 A protest against any alteration of the existing embargo against the importation qf potatoes into Australia has heen sent to the Prime Minister, Mr. J. A. Lyons, by Tasmanian members of the Senate.
In their telegram to Mr. Lyons, the Senators Kay" they are seriously perturbed at press reports to the effect that in reopening the negotiations with New Zealand there may be interference with the potato embargo, and they add that any admission of additional potatoes into Australia would be disastrous for Tasmania.
Potato production in Tasmania, they state, is one of the State's best industries, and it nuibt be preserved at all costs. The loss of the market for potatoes would mean a very considerable increase in unemployment figures, which would thus gravely embarrass the Stale.
