"While a performer was singing *' The Minstrel Boy," at a school concert, the first floor of St. Clement's School, Liverpool, / collapsed- under the weight of 500 people, including children, who fell in a heap on the floor 40ft. below. Chairs and benches went through the floor like an avalanche, causing panic. Some who escaped spread the alarm, fend police and ambulances rushed to the scene. Thirty-six were taken to hospital and it is feared that several will die. Over 100 were medically treated and fcent home. When the floor collapsed, the gaslighted building was plunged into darkless and intensified the horror. Explosions were feared, and gas company officials rushed to the scene to cut off the supply. Children, women and men struggled in a heap under the floor. Some were Crushed by desks falling on top of ifchem.
