AERODROME FOR NELSON
RECLAMATION 'SCHEME
PROPOSAL TO GOVERNMENT
A scheme for the construction of ai. aerodrome on the upper portion of the mud flat of Nelson Harbour was placed before the Minister of Defence and Marine, the Hon. J. G. Cobbe, in Wellington on Monday, by a deputation representative of the Nelson Progress League and the Nelson Harbour Board It was stated that the present site at Stoke was inadequate for the needs of the district, and it was believed that a suitable ground could be made on the mud flat close r ta the Boulder Bank and away from the hills. It was proposed to build a stop-bank across the north-eastern portion of the mudflats, and it was hoped to construct an aerodrome embracing 800 acres. The land enclosed by the stop-bank, which was dry, with the exception of the occasion of high spring tides, could be reclaimed, and it was proposed that the work" could be done by relief labour. Mr. B. J. Millier, who represented the Marine Department, stated that he favoured the proposal, but it.would be necessary to ascertain whether the reclamation would affect the efficiency of the harbour by decreasing the flow of water. , The Minister said that the proposals would be investigated at the earliest opportunity.
