GROWING POPULATION
TOWNS OF HAWKE'S BAY
CITY STATUS BY 1944 A notable conclusion, from the viewpoint of local interest, drawn from the figures recently issued by the Govern ment Statistician's office concerning the populations of various urban areas is that if the population of Hastings increases during the next 10 years a rate corresponding with that of the past 10 years the town should possess a population of 20,000 or over, and thus attain the .status of a city by. 1944. During the past 10 years the rate oi increase in the Hastings urban area was 22.5, which was greater than that of any other borough, with the one exception of New Plymouth. The rate of increase in Napier during the same period was 7.3, which was the, lowest among all the 14 urban areas. The present population of the urban area of Hastings stands at 17.200. The urban area of Napier is 19,950. In the 10 years the increase in the Napier area was 1345 and in the Hastings area 3165 With the maintenance of the same rate of increase both towns ;vill have obtained the status of cities in another 10 years' time, the population of Hastings being 21,070 and that of Napier 20,977.
