TECHNICAL COLLEGE

RECORD DAY ROLL LIST OF PRIZE-WINNERS SCHOLARSHIP AND SPORT The fact that the day school roll, 1328, constituted a record was mentioned by the principal of the Seddon Memorial Technical College, Mr. Gr. J. Park, at the annual prize-giving ceremony of the college yesterday. The figure was double what it was 10 3 ears ago. Of the 601 girl day pupils, 360 were studying commercial and commercial art courses and 234 domestic science. Of the 724 boys 26S were studying engineering, 165 accountancy, 82 agriculture. 75 motor engineering, 68 woodwork and 54 printing. The total number of pupils attending evening classes was 2172. During the year additions to provide accommodation for an agriculture laboratory, a farm mechanics laboratory, an engineering drawing office, a dressmaking room and extra classrooms had been erected at a cost of X'3ooo. New equipment' had cost £750. "If the number wishing to attend the college continues to increase as it has done in the past,- a grave position will arise in the near future," added Mr. Park, who urged the provision of at least' two junior technical schools in Auckland. The present buildings could not bo extended further and if tho roll continued to grow larger some applicants would have to bo refused. " Preparatory technical courses are needed as much here as they are overseas and junior departments are necessary if costly institutions of tho type of this college are to serve the community as efficiently as they can do," Mr. Park added. The principal paid a tribute to the unselfish manner in which members of the staff had performed their duties and to the services rendered by members of the board of managers. Speeches were made by the chairman of the board, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, and Miss M. B. Carnachan, a member, in which they expressed gratification at the progress or the school in recent years. » Prizes and sports trophies were distributed by Mrs. Allum as follo.ws: — FORM PRIZES Commercial la.—Margaret Gow, 1; Mavis Angus, 2. , Commercial lb.—M.
