STREET WIDENING
EDEN TERRACE SCHEME FURTHER STAGE REACHED Further progress with the negotiations for the widening of the portion of the New North Road known as Eden Terrace was reported to the City Council by the city engineer, ]\lr. J. Tyler, last night. He said there were 10 properties between Haslett Street and Virginia Avenue on the northern side of the New North Road with a frontage of 430 ft. The frontage of the four western properties bad been set back and buildings altered or rebuilt to conform to the new line. Mr. Tyler said he had been negotiating with the remaining six owners and he estimated that it would cost £2523 to complete the widening. Alterations to power, tramway and telegraph services would cost £855, getting back kerbs and restoring roads, paths and fences, £525; reconstruction of one shop and provision of temporary accommodation, £670, and cost of land, £473. As provision had been made in this year's estimates for the scheme, be recommended that he be authorised to complete witfc the owners and do tho work. The question of a claim for betterment being made by the council had been raised by the owners. No such claim had been made in similar cases and an assurance could be given that betterment wquld not bo claimed in this case. The city engineer's report was adopted.
