CONTROL OF HAWKERS
LOCAL BODIES' SUPPORT
LICENSING BY THE POLICE
Notice that l-l local bodies supported a proposal for an improved system of licensing hawkers and pedlars was received at a meeting of tho Auckland Suburban Local Bodies' Association last night. The system was first submitted to the association by the One Tree Hill Borough Council last October. Tho basis of tho scheme is that the licencing of hawkers and pedlars should be done solely by the police. Only applicants of good character would be granted a licence, which would bo available throughout tho Dominion, and means of identification, such as a numbered armlet, would be issued with each licence. A foe would be charged, of which 50 per cent would bo retained to cover administration charges and the balance distributed among local bodies. ' A sub-committee was appointed to confer with Mr. G. W. Hutchison, Mayor of Auckland, on the question and "report, to the association at its next meeting in February.
