REDUCING PUNCTURES
USE OF MAGNETIC TRUCK SUCCESS IN SOUTH ISLAND SOME REMARKABLE RESULTS Remarkable results in removing puncture-producing material from roads are being achieved by the Main Highways Board's magnetic truck, which has been in the South Island since May. In a letter received from Mr. M. H. Wynyard, motorists' representative on the board, at last night's meeting of the council of the Automobile Association (Auckland), it was stated that an average of 3.21b. of material likely to cause punctures was removed from a. mile of road. Altogether 918 miles of road had been "swept" in the South Island and 29271b. of iron lifted. Mr. Wynyard said it would take about three months to complete the South Island, after which the truck could be brought to Auckland, later going to the Far North and then to Wellington. "The material will make more scrap iron for Japan," 'remarked l)r. J. Howard La wry. It was decided to urge the provision of an additional magnetic truck, allowing one for each island.
