NEXT SCHOOL YEAR

DATES OF TERMS FIXED On the recommendation of the Education Department the following terms for 1935 were approved for schools in the Auckland district, at a meeting of the Auckland Education Board yesterday:— Primary Schools (including district high schools). —First term, Monday, February 4, to, Friday, May 10; second term, Monday, May 27 to Friday, August 23; third term, Monday, September 9 to Thursday, December 19. Secondary and Technical High Schools.—First term, Tuesday, February 5 to Friday, May 10; second term, Tuesday, May 28 to Friday, August 23; third term. Tuesday, September 17 to Wednesday, December 18. The reason for secondary schools having longer holidays than primary schools was sought by several members, the chairman, Mr. T. U. Wells, stating that ho thought the general reason was that it was considered older pupils required somewhat longer periods of relaxation. Mr. C. F. Collins said that, speaking as an ex-headmaster, he had found that the holding of holidays for primary and secondary schools at different times was a great, nuisance, especially in a small town.

Mr. A. N. Mack.v supported Mr. Collins' remarks, and on his motion it was decided to inform the Education Department that, in the opinion of the board, holidays for both primary and secondary schools should synchronise.
