WELCOME AGREEMENT

YUGOSLAVIA! AND HUNGARY EFFECTIVENESS OF LEAGUE LONDON, Dec. 11 After yesterday's pessimism the unexpectedly satisfactory settlement at Geneva in the dispute between Yugoslavia and Hungary has pleasantly surprised Yugoslavia. Under such headings as "Glorious Success at Geneva!" the Belgrade newspapers refer to the Complete capitulation of Hungary — "tha greatest defeat any independent State has suffered." The Hungarian press similarly expresses satisfaction at the solution, and unanimously praises Mr. ■ Anthony Eden as rapporteur, emphasising Britain's impartiality and moral authority. Replying to a question in thd House of Commons relating" to the YugoslavHungarian dispute, Sir John Simon expressed satisfaction that the Yugoslav appeal to the League, " which threatened to give rise to a difference of view, has now been dealt with in a way which should lead to reconciliation and appeasement."

Sir John said that the British Government throughout had been exerting itself in all useful quarters to ameliorate the situation. He took particular satisfaction in the important part Mr. Anthony Eden, in co-operation with other members of the Council, had played in the matter.

"The outcome," added the Foreign Secretary, "now largely depends on the local situation as between Yugoslavia and Hungary, and it is sincerely to be hoped that this -will improve. However, there can be no doubt that the favourable position which has been reached from a situation which formerly appeared grave is due/ first and foremost,' to the existence and effectiveness of the League of Nations."
