ROAD-PAVING WORK
BIG CANTERBURY SECTION £46,000 CONTRACT LET To cost approximately £46,000, the Work of paving the Canterbury Main South highway between Rolleston and the Rakaia bridge represents the biggest road-paving contract let in that province. A tender has been accepted by the Public Works Tenders Board, and the contractors will start with the transport of plant to the site this week. The work is to be finished in 12 months. When this section of main highway is finished, and also a stretch above Leithfield, there will be 98 miles of paved road. That work, including the erection of three bridges, will have been carried out in 10 vears at a cost of £378,000. The Rolleston-Rakaia stretch of road is 191 miles long, and particularly at the Rakaia bridge end has been a bugbear to motorists for many years.
