CAULFIELD CUP

JOURNAL'S NARROW WIN BRILLIANT FINISHING DASH SIR SIMPER RUNS THIRD NEW ZEALAND-BRED WINNERS (Received October 21, 5.5 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Oct. 21 The weather was fine and there was an enormous attendance at the second day of the Victoria Amateur Turf Club's meeting at Caulfield yesterday. The Duke of Gloucester arrived after the second race and remained to present tho gold cup to Mr. J. T. Cush, owner of tho Caulfield Cup winner, Journal. Journal, with a brilliant run won the Caulfield Cup in the last few strides. Farndalo ran a great race. Sir Simper made a wonderful effort after being last at the home turn and appeared a certainty beaten. A. R. Knox, rider of the winner, won the race previously on Denis Boy in 1931. A remarkable feature of the race was that Journal and Farndale were the last two at the seven furlongs. Rogiiia went a good race. His rider, 1). Alunro, stated that his weight beat him. A. R. Knox said that Journal began slowly but put in a great run in the final stages. H. Moran, rider of Farndale, thought lie had tho race won at the straight entrance but Journal was too good. F. Denipsey, rider of Sir Simper, said his horse was field shy and the post position near the rails beat him. In the circumstances the horse recorded a remarkable performance. Journal is now liable for a rehandicap for the Melbourne Cup. In a good finish in the Wyuna Steeplechase Winging Home outstayed his opponents. Quarto was fortunate to defeat the fast-finishing Rcinsant in tho Burwood. Her rider, M.: McCarten, won the event previously on Shakuni. Quarto was bred in New Zealand. Princess Cynthia, a full-sister to Hall Mark, scored an appropriate win in the Mona Nursery. She is owned by tho Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Sir H. Gengoult Smith. Princess Cynthia led throughout; She is named alter the Mayor's wife. Whernside finished strongly to win the Gwyn Nursery. He is trained by W. Hawthorn and owned by Mr. W. It. Kemball, of Wellington. The Auck-land-owned colt Teak ran inglyA. Fairbanks, rider of Mitten in tho Wyuna Steeplechase, hit the rail with his left leg at the straight entrance and sustained a compound fracture" of the left tibia and fibula. He showed great fortitude in finishing the race. Polly Speck, always prominent, gained a comfortable win in the Windsor Handicap. Silver Ring tired with his big weight of 9.11. Mr. Kemball's pair, Morbury and Staghorn, were never dangerous. Results: BURWOOD HANDICAP, Of £100; three-year-olds; 8J fur. QUARTO (New Zealand-bred), J. S.
