NOTES ON THE RACING

TRANSWORTHY WINS WELL MANNA'S SON BEATS GANTON VICTORY FOR LADY FAME by archer The Waitemata Handicap provided one of the best contests seen in a slowclass trotters' race at Epsom for some time and there was very little between the first six horses at the finish. The winner, Mute, reached the front quickly and, after leading into the straight from Young Bodney, Grand Triumph, Mountain Sun, Wreckless and Polly Pan, stayed on to win by a neck from Mountain Sun. Young Rodney was another neck away third and Grand Triumph T> a ?i up fourth, closely followed by I oily Pan and Autumn Lu, with a gap to Captain Bolt and Wrackless, who was easing up. Mute is owned by the Hawke's Bay sportsman Mr. J. H. Xjloyd and he joined S. M. August's team only in the early part of this season. It was Mute's first victory and he was assisted by beginning well and going very solidly afterwards. Mountain Sun and Young Roaney trotted fine races. Mountain bun finishing well after being on the outside when the field was bunched across the top and round the home turn. Grand Iriumph was pocketed on the rails behind the winner entering the straight, and appeared to be full of running, only to break when he changed his course to go for an opening in the run home. Wrackleßsi was up handy at the home turn, and should be improved by the race. Polly Pan displayed speed in patches and may have won only for making more than one mistake. Audo Patch refused to begin correctly and was Pulled up before going two furlongs. The moderately-fancied Transworthy led throughout to win the- Impiovers' Handicap very easily from Nelson Luvan. Transworthy was always clear over the last half-mile, and won by three and a-half lengths from Nelson Luvan, who was his closest attendant over the last three furlongs. Great Chum, after being checked when Silver Watch broke and swerved out on to him in the straight, finished on to get third two lengths away, and Silver Watch was fourth. Next to finish were Tinokaha, Bismuth, Kowpie's Crest, Rare Rey and Proletarian. Defeat of Ayrmont Chimes Transworthy paced evenly throughout and was never seriously troubled. Nelson Luvan went his usual honest race and Great Clium was closer at the finish than at any other stage. Silver Watch and Tinokaha both broke in the run home, otherwise they would have been a little closer. Star Pronto and Proletarian broke up in the early stages, Star Pronto badly interfering with Bismuth and Rare Rey. Bismuth was staying on solidly at the finish and would have done much better only for the early interference. The southerner Ayrmont Chimes was an each-way favourite for the Jellicoo Handicap, but tbo best he could do was to finish third. Wrecker went away well from the limit, with Groat Parrish and Willie Derby in close attendance, and he was never headed, drawing awny in the last couple of furlongs to win by three and a-half lengths from Great Parrish. Ayrmont Chimes was half a length away third, just cutting Peter Pirate out of that position by half a head. First. Flight was close up fifth, .followed by Willie' Derby and Auto Machine, with Jewel Pointer and Impromptu a long way back. Wrecker was always travelling well in the lead and gave nothing a chance at the finish. Great Parrish and Ayrmont Chimes both skipped in the run home, but neither appeared to have any ohance with the winner. Peter Pirate had every chance and was just beaten out of a place in the last couple of strides. First Flight, after tangling at the end of the first furlong, paced evenly and was close enough at the finish to be a possibility for a race shortly. She should be all the better for the ran. Willie Derby paced a good race until he broke about two furlongs from home, and effectually settled his chance. Impromptu failed badly and was mixing his gait throughout. It was stated that Impromptu had done very little work in the week preceding the meeting, a statement that was supported by Mr- H. Rouse, caretaker of the course at Claudelands, where Impromptu is trained. Wee Machine Breaks Badly . ifhe each-way favourite Wee Machine spoilt an excellent winning chance by breaking badly early in the Parnell- Handicap, and in the circumstances he did exceptionally well to finish second. Gumdigger led for half a mile, when he broke badly, and interfered with Realty, Nimbus and Francis Lincoln. Travis then dashed to ilie lead and showed the way into the straight to Realty, Homeward, Wee Machine and Nimbus. Once they straightened up, Travis began to tire, and Realty, finishing strongly, won by a length and a-quarter from Wee Machine, who defeated Nimbus by tk length. Francis Lincoln was a head away fourth, followed by Travis, Hohoro and Homeward. Realty's success was long overdue, as he went through the whole of last season without scoring a win, Weo Machine lost a lot of ground when he broke, his driver having to pull him up almost to a walk before he struck his hopples again. Francis Lincoln was the chief sufferer in the crowding that occurred when Gumdigger broke, and his effort was aho good. Travis failed to stay at the end, but he may be improved by the race, which was his first for 6ome time. Homeward was prominent to the turn and then weakened. The others were well beaten. E. Groat scored his second successive win when he won the Mountain Handicap with Manna's Son, who wag second favourite on both machines to Ganton. MSmna's Son was on the move at the start and went away smartly to lead throughout and win by a length from Ganton, with Autumn Lu a length and a-half away third. Mountain Sun was close up fourth, with Nelson Pirate, Gala Day and Kohewah following at intervals. Santon Very Unlucky Ganton appeared to be a good thing beaten. He was stopped when Whiriwhata refused to leave the mark and the winner had a commanding lead before he could get going. Once into his stride Ganton trotted faultlessly, but the effort of overtaking the field in the first round left him wanting at the finish and, after running up to Manna'B Son at the turn, he was unable to go with him in the last 100 yards. Autumn Lu trotted a good race _ and paid a fine price for a place. Mountain Sun finished on strongly after breaking about two furlongs from home, and would have been dangerous only for his mistake. Nelson Pirate did best of the others, but he also lost ground by making a couple of breaks. The improving Edna Worthy, third fancy on both machines to Guymond and Luminate, Bcored in the October Handicap, although she wf.a all out to win from Guymond. Edna Worthy followed the pacemaker Worthy Chief for about a mile and then assumed command to lead into the straight two lengths cllcar of Guymond. Although tiring quickly at the finish, Edna Worthy won by a length and a-half from Guymond, who defeated Alexis by two lengths. Worthy Chief was two lengths away fourth, with Gumdigger, Moko Girl and Luminate well back. < Tbo race wsb run to suit Edna Worthy, but she was stopping badly at the' finish. However, she seems to be staying a little better than formerly. Guymond had every chance and was also very tired at the end, although he battled on gamely. Luminate extinguished his chance by failing to begin correctly and the others were well beaten. A Spectacular Finish Worth:? Light was a solid favourite on both miichinea for the Electric Handicap and he duly won, although He had to be hard driven to win narrowly in one of the most spectacular finishes seen at Epsom for some time. Free Logan began smartly land made all the Tunning to lead into the straight from Manco, Worthy Light (outside), Smooger (rails), Travis and Lady Coronado, with the others all handy. In a great race home Worthy Light won by half a length from Travis, who beat Free Logan by a head. Kewpi?'s Triumph was another head fourth, with. Sniooger and Lady Coronado almost in line, and First Flight next. Worth* Light was giving the leaders a fair start after going six furlongs, but he went the last half-mile in great style. Travis and Kewpie'i) Triumph both finished strongly and the latter may havo won if he had received an uninterrupted rnn when attempting to get -through on the fence at the finish. J. B. Pringlo and his patron, Mr. W. Johnstone, scored their second success of the day when Lady Fame defeated the enchway favourite King's Warrior in tly Stewards' Hundicnp. Lady Amanda established a good lead early, but she was headed three furlongs from home by Lady Fame, who led inia the straight from Lady Amanda, King's Warrior and Fed Hope. Lady Fame stayed on solidly in the Tun home to win by a length and a-half from King's Warrior. who defeated War Girl by two Irnsths. Lady Amatiada was fourth, succeeded by Red" Hope and Bonnie Direct. I TROTTING FIXTURES October 22—Auckland Trotting Club. October 22—Greyniouth Trotting Club.
