OPENING OF COMPETITION [from our own correspondent] PUKEKOHE, Saturday Rather boisterous weather greeted the opening of the Pukekohe Cricket Association's season this afternoon. A keen southwesterly wind with rain showers made the conditions anything but pleasant. Play, however, was continued until time. The two Pukekohe teams. United and Colts, met at Blcdisloe Park, Pukekohe. United batted first and made 1W runs (Carter 47, MofStt 14 not out. Foster 11). A. Hewitt took sis wickets Lawrie two for 26 and Mills one for 21. Colts' first innings realised 77 runs (Stoupe 15). H. Pleydell took four wickets for 15 runs, Hav.-ko four for 30. and D. Carter two for 17. United had one- wicket down for 27 runs (Rose 15 not out, Hnrwood 10) when stumps were drawn for the day. Against Waiau Pa. on the Waiuku ground, Waiuku occupied the wicket all afternoon and made 19C> runs (Heise CB, Harper S5, Thomas 26, Zinzan 17, Aspin 16, Sampson 10). Butters took two wickets for 14 runs, C. Wright two for 20. J. Wright one for IS. Riddell one for IS. Brookes one for 22. Wills one for 40 and Griffiths one for 44. The Tuakau team made the trip to Maukn to try conculsions with the local team. Mauku went fTrst to the wickets and opened with 58 runs (Deinpsey 21, HeFad den 35). In the bowling. PIAKO ASSOCIATION [from our own correspondent] MATAMATA, Saturday Playing in the Piako Cricket Association's competitions to-day Matamata A secured a fairly easy win over Okauia at Bedford Park, the margin being 93 runs. Matamata had three wickets down for 44 runs on resuming, and before lunch was out for 130. Renton, 35. _ Griffiths. 20. and Delaney. 15. were the chief scorers. Facing a deficit of 183 run 3, Okauia batted stubbornly for 85. Carter carrying his bat from first wicket for '29, and Bruce making 30. Matamata took the opportunity to give its players bowling practice. For Okauia Sharpe took five wickets for 37, and for Matamata Renton took four for 13 and Kemp two for 9. Matamata B team collapsed unexpectedly on the> other ground against Old Boys, being dismissed for 17. NEW CLUB AT KOHUKOHU [from ovr own correspondent] KOHUKOHU, Saturday There was a large attendance at Kohukohu last evening when a- cricket club was formed and designated the Kohukohu Cricket Club. Mr. E. Kingdon presided and the following officers were elected:—Patron, Mr. W. H. Kirkpatrick; president, Mr. T. Hodges; vice-presidents, Messrs. Woolsey, Allen, P. Reid, R. Yarborough, J. N. Dougherty. Dr. Mail; club captain, Mr. E. Kingdon: committee. Messrs. T. C. Bowler, E. Kingdon. A Kelly; secretary and treasurer, Mr. Arthur Kelly. Cricket clubs are being formed in several places in Hokianga this year.
