NOTICE TO QUIT
MAORIS ON PUBLIC LAND ACTION AT NEW PLYMOUTH Action is to bo taken by the New Plymouth Harbour Board to force Maoris at present in occupation of Harbour Board property at Ngamotu Beach to evacuate it by February 1, 1935. The decision was made upon the advice of the board's solicitors. The board's solicitors advised having perused the report issued by Judge Browne, of the Native Land Court, who had given judgmcut against the petitioners on all points, holding that they should be dispossessed of the property. He considered the board had been remiss in not evicting the Maoris from the land and in not preventing other Maoris from entering occupation. If this opinion was correct, it was clear that the duty of the board was to take immediate steps to have the Maoris evicted, the letter added. It was out of consideration for the Maoris that no action was taken and it was unfortunate that the board should flow be blamed. In view of tho Judge's criticism, it appeared plain that it would bo unwise to allow the existing state of affairs to continue.
